Discover Moseley Arts Market in the District

Since 2013, you might have noticed that, once a quarter, Birmingham Cathedral Grounds sees a market pop up selling a fantastic array of arts and crafts. Our Moseley Arts Market “on the move” brings one of the city’s best markets into the city centre for you to enjoy.

The market is one of my favourite events that Colmore BID does; I’ve worked every one since joining the team in 2014. We’re out at (what feels like) the crack of dawn (7.30), to get all of our artists set up for a day of trading. Over the years, I’ve seen some fantastic arts and crafts on display; everything from ceramics and hand-turned wooden crafts to paintings, photography, cards and jewellery. We have some regular traders, but we always have a few new faces with something unique and interesting to sell.

What sets this apart from other markets is the strict criteria for artists. All products must be created by the stall holder; there are no products bought in and resold. This gives the traders a genuine passion for all of their products; they know them well because they made them. I always try and catch up with a few of the traders to find out more about them, their work, and what inspires them.

Our first market of the year is on Friday 31 March 2017. It’s a great opportunity to get away from the desk. If you’re looking for something more meaningful than a chocolate egg for an easter gift, why not see if you can find something at the market. We will have three more markets this year, so put the following dates in your diary:

  • 26 May 2017
  • 8 September 2017
  • 8 December 2017

The market in December is usually my favourite. It’s dark and it’s cold, but the lights make the Cathedral Grounds feel really special, and of course, there’s a real festive feel to the day.

On Friday, you’ll also find members of the Colmore BID team behind a stall! It’s a great opportunity to come and meet us and we’re bound to have a few things to give away as well, although none of them as good quality as the arts and crafts on sale!

I’m already looking forward to our programme of markets this year; be sure to come and say hello on Friday!
