Opening Doors to Pride: Empowering Community Through Access

06 June 2025

As part of our ongoing commitment to inclusivity and community empowerment and sponsorship of Birmingham Pride’s low income ticket scheme, we were proud to two members of the Ladywood Community Project with free tickets to annual celebration.

We caught up with Ben and Paul (L-R) about their experience, and how event organisers can make their offerings more accessible and inclusive for all.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your connection to the Ladywood Community Project?

We are local residents who have used the services of the Ladywood Community Project and the community centre for many years. It has been a valuable part of our lives and has supported us in various ways over time.

How you ever attended Birmingham Pride before this year? If not, what were your main barriers to attended?

We attended Birmingham Pride many years ago, but in recent years we have not been able to go due to the cost. Financial barriers have made it difficult for us to take part in events like this.

How did you feel when you found out you were receiving free tickets to Birmingham Pride?

We were absolutely over the moon and incredibly excited. It felt like a wonderful opportunity and we were so grateful to be given the chance to attend.

What was your experience like at the event? Any standout moments?

The event was absolutely amazing. The parade was a particular highlight—so vibrant, joyful, and beautifully attended. It really stood out as a celebration of community and diversity.

Did attending Birmingham Pride change how you feel about being part of the wider Birmingham Community?

No, it didn’t change how I feel, as I have always felt like a part of the wider Birmingham community. However, the event certainly reaffirmed that sense of belonging.

What did it mean to you personally to be able to attend an event like this for free?

It meant a great deal to us. We felt overjoyed, and it was such a kind and thoughtful gesture. We’re truly thankful to Colmore BID for the opportunity, as it allowed us to be part of something special that we otherwise couldn’t afford.

What would you say to someone who’s never been to Birmingham Pride before?

I would definitely encourage them to go and give it a try. It’s an amazing experience—full of energy, celebration, and community spirit.

In your view, how can Birmingham’s event organisers make events like this even more accessible and inclusive for all in the future?

I think lowering the cost would make a big difference. I understand that it costs a lot to organise such an event, but more awareness around the reduced-price tickets for people on low incomes or benefits would be really helpful. It’s a very welcome initiative that should be more widely promoted.
