Supporting the District’s SMEs and Start-Ups

As part of the Community Building Working Groups’ agenda we support Small and Medium Enterprise businesses in the District.  Not only can you get access to free resources from Colmore BID, like collective purchasing deals, we’ll also list resources, materials and workshops from other partners including Aston Business School and The Chamber of Commerce. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.

In November 2017, we are working with Aston Business School to provide support, advice and resources for start-up businesses and Small and Medium size Enterprises (SME’s)

There will be three FREE workshops for these businesses in November.

Workshop 1 – Brand Management and Customer Retention

7th November, 6-8pm, KPMG, One Snowhill.

Successful brands are one of the most significant ways for companies to gain competitive advantage. Strong brands are essential for attracting new customers and retaining existing customers. Professor Blut presents results of a study which uses data from 133,000 customers to test the effects of strong brands on customer behavior. The presentation addresses several questions in brand management: (1) Which customers are more likely to appreciate strong brands and (2) how can firms manage strong brands? Managers receive guidance regarding the importance of customer characteristics (age, gender, income, alternative experience, susceptibility to influence, risk aversion), relational characteristics (relationship duration, critical incident, breadth of service usage, extent of modification, transaction frequency, marketing campaigns), and marketplace characteristics (available alternative, product complexity) for brand management.

About the speaker

Markus is professor and chair in marketing at Aston Business School. Before joining Aston University, he worked as professor of marketing at Newcastle University Business School (UK). During the last years, he was invited as visiting professor by the University of Alabama (USA), Florida Atlantic University (USA), and Curtin University (AUS). His research interests are related to service and retail marketing/management. He has published more than 160 articles in established journals, books, proceedings, and journals. He regularly works together with international firms on joint research and consulting projects including BMW, Borussia Dortmund, Claas, Dr. Oetker, Henkel-Ecolab, KarstadtQuelle Bank, Karstadt Warenhaus, McDonald’s, Mercedes-Benz, Merck, Procter and Gamble, Robert Bosch, and T-Mobile International among many others. Markus is Co-Director of the Aston Centre for Retail Insights (ACRI) which conducts relevant, cutting-edge research, using the latest techniques to analyse and make sense of data. ACRI aims at establishing linkages between practitioners and science, among practitioners from different retail backgrounds, and between future retail leaders and potential employers

Workshop 2 – Transformational Leadership

14th November, 6-8pm, Barclays Eagle Lab

‘Understanding the key leadership behaviours that can encourage performance beyond expectations.’

Dr Nishat Babu is a Business Psychologist and Lecturer in the Work and Organisational Psychology Group at Aston Business School, with expertise in a number of areas; including leadership, global working, and effective team work. Her research interests centre on leadership and corporate social responsibility (CSR) at the micro-levels. Currently, she is focusing on leadership and organisational climate, and the role they play in facilitating employee engagement with CSR at multiple levels within the organisation. She has developed a unique multi-dimensional tool to measure employee social responsibility in the workplace, and has applied this in her research with organisations looking to enhance their CSR profile. Nishat holds a Master’s in Work and Organisational Psychology, and a PhD in Management

Workshop 3 -Motivate and Engage your Team

28th November, 6-8pm, Barclays Eagle Lab

This is an interactive workshop which will provide businesses with practical tools for team development.

The evening of learning and games, inspired by the Business School’s latest research in work and organisational psychology, will show your team how to improve communication and increase cohesion.

The workshop led by Andrew Marcinko, from the Behavioural Insights Group at Aston Business School, will explore how to:

  • Build communication and cohesion in teams
  • Develop resilient teams who respond well to stress and disruptions
  • Understand motivation and engagement cycles in teams.

To join the workshop submit a group of four colleagues from your business as a team with a sentence about what you would most like to improve.

About Andrew

Andrew Marcinko is a PhD Candidate in the Work and Organisational Psychology department at Aston Business School, working under the supervision of Dr Yves Guillaume and Prof Richard Crisp. He is also an Associate Consultant with the Aston Behavioural Insights Group which helps organisations take the first steps to applying social psychology at work. The Aston Behavioural Insights Programme can be delivered as consultancy, coaching, training or as an education initiative to deliver the latest insights from the field of behavioural insights to design, develop and enhanced aspects of company culture, from workplace experience, to marketing, productivity, performance and innovation.

Andrew completed his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in the United States and was born and raised in the Washington DC area. His current research is focused on diversity and inclusion in the workplace, with a particular interest in diversity management, team performance, and employee well-being. Previously, Andrew worked in collaboration with the U.S. Navy Submarine School and NASA on projects involving high-stress teams and performance. He also has extensive experience both producing and appearing on blogs, podcasts, and other media.
