The City Gallery: Bringing Art into Everyday Spaces in Birmingham

15 April 2025

Reimagining the Gallery Experience for the Modern City

After four successful years in Edgbaston Village, the multi-award-winning Lux Gallery is stepping into an exciting new chapter—one that places art directly into the heart of Birmingham’s business and leisure spaces. Welcome to The City Gallery, a new initiative aimed at transforming how art is experienced in urban settings, and how local businesses can play a direct role in supporting Birmingham’s creative economy.

With the City Gallery model, Lux Gallery is creating a dynamic, rotating network of satellite exhibition spaces across Birmingham, curated with care and driven by collaboration. The concept is simple yet powerful: Lux supplies and installs stunning, high-quality artwork in partner venues—at no cost. These artworks are handpicked from a pool of over 60 talented local and regional artists, offering a unique and ever-changing visual experience for your clients, visitors, and staff.

Why It Works for Everyone

This model isn’t just about hanging pictures on a wall. It’s about building bridges between the city’s artists, businesses, and communities. It’s about creating visually stimulating environments that elevate your space while also offering artists meaningful exposure and the potential to sell their work.

Here’s how the City Gallery model benefits everyone involved:

  • Venues receive expertly curated artwork on rotation, adding vibrancy, style, and conversation-starters to their space—without having to purchase a thing.
  • Artists gain valuable exposure in high-footfall, real-world settings, reaching new audiences who may not typically visit a gallery.
  • Lux Gallery continues its mission to support and showcase Birmingham’s creative talent, while forging new cultural connections across the city.

In essence: venues get free art, artists get seen, and Lux continues to energise the city’s cultural scene. It’s a win–win–win.

The Ideal Gallery Partner

We’re currently looking to expand this successful model into Birmingham’s Colmore Business District and beyond. Could your venue be our next partner?

Ideal spaces include:

  • Offices, co-working spaces, or reception areas with regular footfall
  • Hospitality venues such as bars, restaurants, and cafes
  • Boutique gyms, salons, or retail outlets catering to an affluent, style-conscious clientele
  • Anywhere with wallspace, good lighting, and a desire to support the local arts community

Being a Gallery Partner is not only a unique way to support Birmingham’s artists, but also a way to make your business stand out. Art creates atmosphere. It tells your visitors you care about creativity, culture, and community.

How It Works

Once your venue is approved, here’s what you can expect:

  • Lux installs a tailored selection of artworks to complement your interior
  • Each piece is accompanied by a discreet label with details, pricing, and a QR code for direct purchase
  • When an artwork sells, Lux handles everything—either arranging pickup or free delivery for the buyer, and promptly replacing the sold piece with a new one
  • Artworks are rotated every 3 months to keep the space fresh and engaging

We’ve already partnered with acclaimed venues like Loki Wine, Chapter Restaurant, and Smoke + Ash—who have all seen strong engagement and multiple sales. This isn’t theory. It works.

Join a Growing Movement

Becoming a City Gallery venue means more than just brightening your walls—it means playing a part in keeping Birmingham’s art scene thriving. In a time when funding cuts and rising costs are threatening the city’s creative sector, this is a way for businesses to give back and gain something valuable in return.

Plus, every partner venue receives promotion through Lux Gallery’s online platforms and social media channels. We’ll be proud to include your name on our growing list of creative collaborators.

Ready to Get Involved?

If you believe your business fits the City Gallery model, we’d love to hear from you. A Lux Gallery representative will visit your venue to assess key factors like layout, lighting, footfall, and overall vibe. It’s important to us that our partnerships are a good fit—for everyone.
