BID unveils “Month of Metal” rock themed events
02 September 2019
With the musical legacy of Birmingham-born Heavy Metal pioneers Black Sabbath currently being celebrated at the Home of Metal exhibition in the city, Colmore Business District is designating September a “Month of Metal” with evenings of rock themed entertainment taking place throughout the month.
The BID has lined up free to attend film shows, a contest to find the District’s best mock rock band, and an Open Mic Night of live music during September.
Kicking off the celebrations are two nights of ‘Heavy Nettl’ as Colmore Cinema Club “rocks” up with film show screenings at Nettl of Birmingham. First up is the Jack Black musical comedy fantasy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, which shows on Thursday, September 12. That’s followed by the classic rock “mockumentary” This is Spinal Tap, which plays on Tuesday September 17.
The next evening, Wednesday 18 September, sees an Open Mic Night of live music showcasing local acts at speciality coffee shop Wayland’s Yard. Then on Friday, September 20, the BID hosts its first ever Battle of the Bands competition at B4. This is an X-Box Rock Band challenge so participants don’t need to be accomplished musicians but a competitive spirit is a must!
Rounding off the music themed films shows is Bohemian Rhapsody. This rollicking rock biopic of Queen’s legendary frontman Freddie Mercury screens in the suitably regal surroundings of the Banqueting Suite at The Council House on Thursday, September 26.

There’s also still time to catch the Home of Metal exhibition. The celebration of Black Sabbath’s cultural impact runs at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery until Sunday, September 29.
