“Stay at home” says UK Government as measures announced to support the NHS
24 March 2020
In today’s COVID-19 Coronavirus briefing, the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, gave an update on the NHS response to the outbreak of the virus. He announced the creation of an NHS volunteer scheme, asking for 250,000 volunteers to support the NHS to deliver services to those covered by the shielding measures announced last week. He also announced the creation of a new hospital which will have a capacity for 4,000 people.
He also reiterated the Prime Minister’s words last night. The message from the Government is clear; people are to stay at home unless
- You are shopping for essentials
- You are carrying out exercise, once per day
- You are leaving your home to respond to a medical need
- You are travelling to or from work, where that work cannot be done from home
The Government announced that a number of enforcement powers have also been signed off to effect the following
- Fines for individuals and dispersal orders for large groups who refuse to follow the above advice
- All shops that are non-essential will be closed
- Libraries, gyms and places of worship will all be closed
- Gatherings of more than 2 will be broken up
- All social events, except funerals are cancelled.
