Colmore BID’s Crucial Role in Rectifying Environmental Issues in City Centre Passageway
29 August 2024
Colmore Business Improvement District (BID) has successfully addressed long-standing environmental issues in a key city centre passageway, ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for businesses and the public.
Wellington Passage had been plagued by a series of issues including rodent infestations, nesting problems, and floor surface damage caused by the nesting. These issues had led to significant operational disruptions, with scaffolding being impossible to erect and frequent missed collections and deliveries as bin companies refused to collect waste from the area.
Recognising the severity of the situation, Colmore BID stepped in to facilitate a collaborative meeting involving all affected businesses, as well as crucial local partners including Birmingham City Council (BCC), BCC Pest Control and Kier. During this meeting, a comprehensive plan of action was formulated, with commitments from all parties to resolve the longstanding issues.
Colmore BID played a pivotal role not only in organising and facilitating these discussions, but also in ensuring accountability and follow-through from all partners involved.
The BID’s Community Operations team, notably John-Jo Von Johnson (Community Operations Manager), Nicole Panayiotou (Community Liaison Executive), and Peter Charalambous (District Cleaner), dedicated significant time and effort to overseeing the project, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the District environment.
With concerted efforts from Kier, BCC Pest Control, Birmingham City Council and Colmore BID, the necessary works were completed, addressing both the environmental and operational challenges.
“The collaborative approach spearheaded by Colmore BID was essential in overcoming the persistent issues in the passageway,” said John-Jo Von Johnson, Community Operations Manager at Colmore BID. “Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that all partners remained accountable and committed to the agreed actions. We are proud of the significant improvements that have been made, which will greatly benefit the local community and District businesses.”
This successful initiative underscores Colmore BID’s dedication to improving the business environment and quality of life in the city centre, reinforcing its role as a vital advocate and facilitator for the local business community.
