Step into the shadows of Birmingham’s city centre this Halloween for Gods and Monsters — a free walking tour that reveals the mythological figures hiding in plain sight among the city’s streets, statues, and skyline.
Led by acclaimed guide and architectural photographer Kevin Thomas, this 90-minute circular tour (approx. 1.5 miles) uncovers the divine and the monstrous in Birmingham’s built environment. From ancient gods to legendary beasts, you’ll encounter:
- Hebe Fountain, Steelhouse Lane – the goddess of youth
- Terracotta Griffins, Corporation Street – winged guardians of the city
- Poseidon and the Kraken, Union Street – the sea god and his lurking nemesis
- George and the Dragon, Newhall Street – a tale of courage and conquest
- Asclepius, Great Charles Street – serpents and the god of healing
- Apollo, Colmore Row – the radiant god of music and light
The tour concludes with a complimentary drink at the atmospheric Old Joint Stock, where you can warm up and reflect on the myths unearthed.
