Birmingham Settlement: Empowering Communities, Inspiring Change
25 March 2025
Founded in 1899, Birmingham Settlement stands as one of the city’s oldest and most enduring charities. Originally established by a group of social reformers outraged by the conditions faced by the poor in 19th-century Birmingham, its early work focused on supporting women and families in the deprived St Mary’s area, now known as Newtown.
Fast forward over a century, Birmingham Settlement’s reach and impact have grown significantly. Today, the charity operates across north-west Birmingham, with community bases in Ladywood and Kingstanding. While the challenges faced by local communities have evolved, so too has the Settlement’s approach. Their adaptable, forward-thinking services address the pressing needs of the city’s diverse populations, ensuring no one is left behind.
Make a Difference: Volunteer with Birmingham Settlement
At the heart of Birmingham Settlement’s mission is community – and there’s no better way to be part of it than by volunteering.
Volunteering with Birmingham Settlement is an opportunity to make a lasting, positive impact, whether it’s supporting families, caring for their urban green space at Edgbaston Reservoir, helping out at food banks, promoting active lifestyles, or lending a hand in one of the charity’s shops.
Not only does volunteering give individuals the chance to give back, but it’s also a brilliant way to:
- Develop practical skills to enhance career prospects
- Gain valuable work experience
- Improve confidence and reduce isolation
- Meet new people and form lasting friendships
- Contribute to meaningful projects
- Have fun while supporting local communities
Short-term and long-term volunteering opportunities are available across their Kingstanding and Ladywood/Edgbaston centres, offering flexibility to suit any schedule.
