DLA Piper completes move to new Birmingham home

28 July 2021

DLA Piper has completed its move to 2 Chamberlain Square. Located in the Paradise Birmingham development, the region’s only global law firm now occupies the top two floors of the landmark building.

Commenting on the move, Birmingham Managing Partner, Trevor Ivory, said;

“I am delighted to have welcomed our people into 2 Chamberlain Square.  The move has also given us an opportunity to make our business as inclusive and sustainable as possible, with these issues being at the heart of our vision from the outset.  The pandemic has complicated the move, but it also challenged our assumptions and gave us the opportunity to think about what our clients and people will need from an office in future.  The location is second to none and is a visible statement of our confidence in the region.”

Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said;

“This move by DLA Piper reflects the huge confidence that businesses still have in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region despite the challenges of the pandemic.  I wish DLA Piper all the best at their new home in Paradise and look forward to working with them in the coming months and years.”

The state-of-the-art office building is designed to the highest environmental standards. Every aspect of the building has been carefully considered to reduce environmental impacts and improve the wellbeing of occupants, from minimising waste during the construction phase to furniture selection and acoustic design.

The building features innovative design elements to help reduce its carbon footprint such as maximising daylight through floor to ceiling glazing to limit the use of artificial lighting. The building, designed by Birmingham based Glenn Howells Architects, has been rated Excellent by the BREEAM sustainable buildings assessment standard, placing it in the top 10% of non-domestic buildings in the UK for sustainability.

Fiona Sharp from TP Bennett, architects and designers of the office interior said:

‘’The new Birmingham office for DLA Piper marks a bold new chapter for the global law firm. The work space provides unparalleled choice with a wide variety of work settings to suit each individual’s needs from single focus rooms up to larger team huddle areas, and embraces hybrid working with departments clustered in neighbourhood groups. The meeting and entertaining facilities, based around an extensive meeting suite and enviable terrace area, providing a first class experience for clients and staff alike to further establish the DLA Piper impressive property portfolio. ‘’

Paradise Birmingham’s development and asset manager is MEPC. Regional development director, Rob Groves, said:

“We welcome the DLA Piper team along with our other occupiers to Birmingham’s premier business address. Together, we are creating a new destination in the heart of the city with cafes, bars and restaurants and bars as well as high quality public realm and new connections across the city centre, all while providing the latest commercial space for global leaders like DLA Piper.”

The interior, delivered for DLA Piper by fit out contractor Overbury, is a fully flexible work space, reflecting the post pandemic work culture of splitting time between home and office, and features innovative tech throughout.  There is also a 30 person boardroom, a dedicated client suite with private dining options and flexible conference facilities for 100 people, plus a stunning terrace with panoramic views of Birmingham.

Andrew Wood, Managing Director for fit out contractor Overbury, said;

“DLA Piper is a globally recognised business and to work alongside them to deliver a best in class office space at 2 Chamberlain Square has been exciting. By working alongside our partner we have been able to create a space that has a heavy focus on collaboration and putting employees in the best position to deliver their work. At the same time we’ve delivered a modern, inviting space that is also eco-friendly and energy efficient.”

The décor features planting throughout both floors and botanic tones reflecting Paradise’s history in the city as medieval fields.  There are also intricate gold and bronze accents on fretwork, lighting, curtains and carpets all designed to capture the work of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

This move cements DLA Piper’s commitment to the local region and its ambitious growth plans as a firm.
