The Big Sleepout challenge for the most challenging time.
16 November 2022
Many of us are going into this winter with a sense of dread. The cost of living is soaring, energy prices have more than doubled and the weekly shop is more expensive than ever.
These increases will push many people into poverty and many family relationships will break down under the strain.
What do you do if you’re already struggling to keep a roof over your head?
On Friday 25th November, St Basils will host their annual big sleepout at Millennium Point in Birmingham to raise vital funds to support young people experiencing homelessness in the West Midlands.
St Basils are a homelessness charity based in the West Midlands that have been supporting young people in fear of losing their home since 1972.
Barrie Hodge Head of Fundraising and marketing for St Basils said:
“Most of our young people who need support are either in full time education or working part-time and sometimes have more than one job, yet are already struggling to survive on a very low income. This year St Basils celebrates its 50th anniversary and with the soaring costs young people are experiencing, we are needed more than ever. We welcome people from across the region to come along, sleepout for the night and help us raise money to support those who need it the most.
Abbie Vlahakis, CEO of Millennium point, said “We are delighted to be hosting St Basils Big Sleepout at Millennium point once again. The team and I are passionate about improving the lives of young vulnerable people and really admire St Basils work. It certainly is a challenge to sleep out for the night with only a cardboard box for shelter, but it in no way represents the true horror of losing your home. I really hope we can encourage a record number of people to sign up to the event and raise as much money as possible so St Basils can continue to support young people in terrible situations in our communities”
